Flate fate hasn’t been beneficial for both since the 70s when the pay ratio was 50/50 .. it’s now 80/20 .. in the shops favor

Flat rate is rough, I stated out at a dealer. Now I’m at an independent family owned shop and I’ve been hourly for almost 15 years. We don’t feel rushed, but we still knock a lot out with only having 3 service bays. We also have 3 quick service bays for light work.

Left flat rate dealership life after 20 years and went to an independent diesel shop for salary. Best move I’ve ever made.

A couple thoughts
1) As you become a higher paid "A" tech they stop giving you the gravy jobs. You only get the tougher jobs that make you feel like cringing when they come in. On top of that, you are expected to take over or at least help when a lower level tech takes an easy job and things go sideways on him. You get a pay raise but then earn less flat rate hours and end up actually making the same or less money.
2) Flat rate is also unfair to the customer. Customer A gets a warranty job or a job where things got complicated and ends up paying less than what the job should have. Then, the next job (customer B) is a gravy brake job that pays 2 hours for something that takes less than an hour. So customer B is paying more to make for the lack of pay for customer A. Customer B should be pissed.

Shop theory in today’s world is just hire more technicians. The shop is like a casino, they never loose.

I'm at an independent and always have been, I recently came across a TSB for a KIA that started to check codes, update TCM software, preform adaptive learn and if that failed to replace the entire transmission. total flat rate time for all including transmission is 3.2 hours. warranty flat rate can get fucked. shit should be illegal

Former Toyota tech current Honda tech here. My boss wants me to go flat rate when there isn’t enough cars coming in for everyone to do good. I worked slow and took my time while I was on guarantee. Soon as I go flat rate I’m going back to the Toyota mentality and showing them how I was able to succeed with 200 cars a day rather than 80.

Our shop is pretty even that way, unfortunately the time that should be made up on CP work is pretty much all wasted waiting for parts to do the estimate, advisors to get it approved and then back to parts to get the parts. Assuming they actually have them..

This is why I left dealership work, 99% warranty and all the gravy was pushed into the hourly guys doing oil changes.

Too many factors that can make flat rate lose many hours over the years. Leave go diesel, marine or industrial even heavy equipment.

I work at a Ford dealer that takes care of everyone as fairly as possible. they give you the option to work flat or hourly and give both the same work for the most part. normally I'd expect they would push the multi hour jobs off to the flat guys, but I'm being given 3+ hour jobs and I'm an hourly guy. now I'm certainly not getting the 10+ hour jobs obviously, but it allows me to actually do real work, and earn raises. Ive worked for alot of places and so far these guys impress me alot

In my experience it’s a great way for the shop to shaft you on hours and work and get free labor with no consequences
