This is a very insightful deep take that I agree with, so I hope u can forgive me for going so surface level, but is it possible that he was just stingy and/or broke + insecure about it?

I think the issues that makes it classiest is that sending your children to private school is obviously good for your school but sending your children to public school is good for society. It’s individualism which is a product of capitalism

The issue isn't the parents wanting the best for their kids, the issue is how such opportunities are unfortunately not easily accessible but that's NOT the parents fault 😭

Wanting better opportunities, experiences, and a fuller life for your son is completely understandable, and there’s nothing classist about that. The complication is that better and/or private education is often tied to privilege simply because access to it is unequal. The systems and opportunities involved are often shaped by class, and it’s important to be aware of that. Access to a better education and more opportunities is a privilege, and sometimes people that grow up with it take it for granted. That being said, wanting the best for your child isn’t classist - it’s simply trying to provide for them and give them the best chance to thrive and be happy in life.

I grew up going to public school and struggled so much. I regularly outperformed the other kids in school and was bullied regularly for it. Being bilingual made it worse. I often had to eat lunch in teachers classrooms. I begged my mom to send me to a better schools. Opportunity is everything.

What if your kid is not offered to go to gymnasium? Would you consider moving to chile or another country you could afford better education?

I grew up as well going to private, bilingual schools and my parents invested in my education. Thanks to that I managed to get jobs and move countries and had the skill to learn new languages and adapt to a new life. I applaud you 👏

I would argue in favour not to support private schooling as because if private schools did not exist and rich families were forced to send their children to public schools, the quality of those public schools would grow due to increases in funding. Which would overall offer better education opportunities for all children regardless of their parents backgrounds

I’ve experienced both, the amount of downgrade I had after going to public school is so far one of my biggest regrets. Public school makes u feel comfortable in being average and not challenging yourself. Not going to public will be one of the biggest reasons your child can experience a better life tbh.

I’m a big believer in not paying for private schooling, but paying for private tuition (instruments, sports, languages, arts etc.)

I live in Chile and I'm a product of the Chilean public education system, and I can tell you it's BAD, very bad. But to make ends meet, I have the opportunity to experience the IB program at UWC. Education is extremely important, a good education gives human beings purpose and aspirations. I say this because I've lived both worlds and perspectives

I think the problem is that there shouldn’t be private schools at all.Because that creates. inequalities.Education should be giving opportunities to all people but I don’t think that’s going to change any time soon so it is completely understandable to want your kids to got to a private school.I live in Greece and the educational system is really bad here.

And not to mention the opportunity to go to university immediately after finishing the 12th grade at a gymnasium. Sadly I find that the german system puts wayy too much pressure on kids:(

My grandfather grew up dirt poor in rural Pennsylvania (US), and he always said “go to the absolute best school you can afford.” He became a self-made millionaire, and it motivated me to go to a top private university and the #1 MBA program in the country at 40. I am fortunate I was able to make this work financially (it wasn’t easy). It opened so many doors and enabled life-changing experiences. I absolutely live by this. No regrets!

Hey I grew up very similarly, I’m Italian but grew up in Singapore and went to an international school that was really expensive but the real luxury is the experiences and larger world view I received in that school. Also did the IB. I 100% back you on this. It’s important

His take doesn’t make any sense…. Giving your child opportunity is the dream of all intentional parents 🥺🫰 I went in South America to private and public school and in Germany from gesamtschule to weiterführenden Schulen…. I fully see your points!!!!!!

I find this confusing. In ireland, public school offers the same opportunities as a private school. Here, it really is just a classism thing and wanting to look better/superior, because there really is no difference between public and private education. In fact, private school is often a lot more uptight and rigid with how students dress (not in good way) and often class sizes are far larger, which of course can make learning more difficult. The pressure to do well in exams is very very intense too because you know your parents are paying thousands for this school as opposed to public (free). I think that kind of pressure is unfair. Public schools often have a much stronger sense of community, and student-student relationships and student-teacher relationships are stronger. Private schools are very academic focused and are not focused on personal growth or anything like that. I would say public schools would actually offer more in terms of personal development because they're not just focused on exams. I think money can be spent much better elsewhere such as extracurricular activities.

i had the same exact experience. growing up in the middle east i went to a private french school that has opened up so many opportunities for me (for example went on a school trip at 11 years old to france for the first time. it was my first time being in europe as well as being away from my parents and that trip has taught me so much and was the start of my independence) and i still reap the rewards of that kind of education well into my adulthood. my parents really really struggled to put me and my sister in that school. we are far from rich and wealthy unlike my peers. but i definitely will put my future kids in the same kind of french private schooling system that i was in as i find it to be extremely important and beneficial. it has nothing to do with “maintaining a social status” whatsoever
