@atsbaseball: Hall of Famer Dave Winfield shares his firsthand experience with the MLB Players Association. The MLBPA is known as the strongest labor union in sports, having transformed the landscape of the game over the past ~60 years. Winfield was one of the defining beneficiaries of the free agency era, signing a 10 year, $23 million deal with the New York Yankees after the 1980 season, which was the largest contract in professional sports history at the time. That type of leverage in negotiations was a result of decades of hard fought battles by Winfield and the MLBPA, securing rights that we’re nonexistent throughout the sports history. And those battles are far from over. The current Collective Bargaining Agreement between the MLB and the MLBPA expires this December and we are already seeing strong disagreements between the two parties. The key issues are nothing new, with the owners pushing for a salary cap to control fixed costs, and the players pushing against a salary cap to promote a free market.
