Also is a throwaway Mandolarian movie really worth going to the theater for? The quality of the show dropped in the last season. The fanbase for this spinoff was also built via their streaming platform. Ppl are already paying an arm and a leg for streaming and know this movie will be on Disney+ soon. I’m fine waiting for streaming for something like this.

Well said. A shift clearly needs to happen to affect the long term health of the film industry but who knows if they’ll ever learn that lesson

This movie would of made more money if they brought it out at the height of Mandalorian. They didn’t. Back in the late 90s movie theaters used to have Blockbusters and B movies showing. NOT EVERY MOVIE needs to be a Blockbuster like today. Movies need to go back to innovative story telling, allowing cinema to take chances which unfortunately isn’t happening anymore.

Make 4 $70m action/sci Fi movies, odds are 2 of them will cover the cost of all them and them some, as usually these are more creatively made like say the John Wick franchise, Bullet Train etc

They should have a whole division the set aside 200-300 million for small/new directors to create original animation and live action family films with a 10 million budget.

Marvel made every studio want to hit a billion dollars home run and no one wants to hit a million dollar double or triple

Star Wars had two problems, one specific to itself and the other what you described. Yes Disney needs to stop marketing movies to investors and make different scales of movies for the audiences again. The specific Star Wars problem is the constant trying to make a “Star Wars” movie instead of a bunch of different genres of movie that are interesting and well written set in the Star Wars universe. The most successful modern Star Wars films and projects broke away from the formula.

do the old Blum House strategy. make a ton of little bets, and the ones that hit will pay for the others and then some

Amanda bringing up the hedge funds etc is really important. Finance types want high returns on investment, Hollywood has always been a risky moneymaker with very thin profit margins, it’s a terrible fit.

Obsession was 750k split by focus features and Blumhouse. Neither wanted to gamble.

Kind of wild that we’re pretty close to even the most cynical take at the time of Disney buying Star Wars. Our lack of antitrust enforcement was and continues to be disturbing.

The simple answer is Star Wars isn’t meant to be constantly in theaters. It’s not James Bond, it’s not Mission Impossible, it’s not Fast and Furious, it’s not Marvel. It’s supposed to come once in a generation, dominate pop culture, and then go back into rest for another 10-15 years. From the moment Iger bought it and announced they were going to do spinoff movies and live action TV, I knew it’d dilute the theatrical presence of Star Wars. Yes, even precious Rogue One dilutes it. The streaming shows have been the most detrimental though because now Star Wars is something you don’t have to get off your ass to go see. There’s 1 or 2 shows every year. Some of shows are good, but I don’t think however good they outweighs the sadness I feel that what was once one of the greatest legacies of cinema is just dead because a bunch of rich shareholders cherish nothing and have no vision.

It’s a prison of their own design, and obviously the right $10 million little movies could break them out, but their brand is built entirely on massive IP. And tiny flops hurt their brand more than the big ones. Mando & Grogu can lick its wounds where it belongs - nestled perfectly in their streaming carousel - but rack up enough little off-brand flops and their brand is harmed irreparably. That
