We tend to minimize our own faults, justify our mistakes, and focus on the faults of others. Psychologists call this self-serving bias…..the tendency to view our own actions in the most favorable light while being more critical of others. For example, a person who gossips may condemn someone who drinks alcohol. Another person who lies may harshly judge someone who dresses immodestly. The sin itself is not necessarily worse or better; it is simply that people often become desensitized to the sins they struggle with while remaining highly sensitive to sins they do not struggle with. The Quran repeatedly warns us against self-righteousness and reminds us that Allah alone knows what is in people’s hearts. Allah says: “So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He knows best who is truly God-conscious.” (Quran 53:32) One of the greatest spiritual diseases in Islam is self-admiration and kibr (((((arrogance))))) believing that one’s own sins are small while magnifying the faults of others. This was the sin of Iblis, who saw the fault of Adam but failed to see the arrogance within himself. The Islamic solution is not to normalize sin or pretend all sins are equal. Rather, it is to approach others with humility and to be harsher on yourself than on others.
