@autismbrainempowerment: Did you know that boys are diagnosed with autism three times more often than girls? This does not mean girls do not have autism; it just means they are much better at hiding it, which is a psychological concept called masking. Girls are naturally very sensitive to social situations, so they work extra hard to copy social cues, fit in with friends, and participate at school. To their teachers and peers, these girls look completely fine, happy, and successful on the outside. However, hiding autism symptoms takes a massive amount of energy and strains the brain. When these girls finally come home to a safe space, they are completely drained and experience intense meltdowns because they cannot hold it together anymore. Parents often feel confused because the school sees a perfect student while the home feels like chaos. If your daughter is fine at school but collapses into meltdowns at home, she is likely masking her stress, and her nervous system needs biological support to recover from sensory overload.
