@drjoe_md: A patient had already been told it was anxiety. It turned out to be a pulmonary embolism. Sometimes the most important thing you can give a patient is enough time to hear the real story. My Plaud NotePin S helps me capture the conversation and organize key points afterward, so I can stay more focused on the patient in front of me. Have you ever known something was wrong even when nobody was listening? #emergencymedicine #medicalstories #anxiety #misdiagnosed
Have you ever been told it was anxiety but it turned out to be something more serious?

There needs to be a feedback loop to the providers that make erroneous diagnosis like this. Like an email telling them that the patient they diagnosed with anxiety and went seeking a second opinion was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism after a CT scan.

I have svt and it was diagnosed as anxiety for 12 years before it was actually figured out.

I've heard way more people complaining about the physicians dismissing their concerns than about the physicians diligently following thru.

Maybe this should be taught in med school as a priority.

Yes!! I went years with gallstones and pelvic hernia. Had symptoms for years but was told to lose weight and I would feel better, and I was a hypochondriac without actually saying it . Two doctors took me seriously. After surgeries, my symptoms went away.

Thank you for listening! I just switched GI doctors and had my first visit with her last week. At the end of the visit, I thanked her for actually listening, and not blowing me off! 🙏

Anxiety should be treated as a symptom, not a diagnosis.

As a psychologist who treats anxiety (especially health anxiety and panic attacks), that’s so great that you didn’t write her off, and took her seriously!

Why do people have to fight so hard for tests that can take 5 minutes to do?

Oh boy, I have pain when taking a deep breath sometimes and I always think is that precordial catch. How do you differentiate between that and a possible clot?

I actually do have panic disorder and I know when I’m having anxiety versus something else at any anxiety I have is like anticipatory anxiety like I’ll have enough of symptoms symptoms, but panic during an annual physical so like I guess that’s the way to differentiate it to

I knew I had a PE, triage left me wait for 6 hours in the ER but never told me they didn’t believe (even told them I have close family history of Factor V), low and behold I had a PE :)

I have Hodgkin’s lymphoma and the first provider I went to said I was “perfectly fine” after my bloodwork came back normal. He said it’s just anxiety.

I had H. pylori and they told me it was anxiety! I mean I did have anxiety from it because they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me for two weeks
