Historical context Jesus spoke these words to the Twelve Apostles as he sent them out to preach. He was preparing them for rejection, persecution, and the difficult choices they would face because of their commitment to him. Main message Matthew 10:34–39 teaches that following Jesus requires wholehearted commitment. The gospel brings peace with God, but it can also bring conflict with people who reject it. Jesus calls his followers to place him above all else, endure hardship faithfully, and trust that true life is found in surrendering themselves to him.
