I’m glad that I never let negative feelings about my larger body stop me from wearing a bathing suit and jumping in the river every day with my son.

My mom had off on Tuesday’s for some reason during the summer, so we’d periodically have “adventure tuesdays” where we would go on day trips to different museums, historical landmarks, or parks that were within a few hours of our house. Having a name for the day made it special. And when we got back we’d sit down and go over our favorite parts of the day.

We made a summer bucket list for several years. Nothing super expensive or crazy but just fun activities to make sure we get to. Try a new park, go to the splash pad, slip n slide, water balloon fight, ice cream sundae bar, etc.

Honestly, it’s the vibes. It’s really the time spent, and how loved and seen they felt

I think any time spent being with a mom who loves her and she feels safe and supported by are the best memories. Going to water parks and beaches is also something my daughter always loves.

Road trips/vacations/camping, beach/lake days, they love day camps I signed them up for, going to the zoo, getting drinks like Italian sodas, going out for ice cream, farmers markets. Basically getting out of the house but also down time too. We mixed it up.

Memories Made by Sonja :
I have older kids and they remember the pool parties on the last day of school. I also did like a basket of fun stuff at the last day of school when they got home so when they got home where they sat at the table was a basket for just them. During the summer we would do a ton of beach days and pool days and trampoline days and those are their favorite memories. Oh also drive-ins.

Go to all the splash pads and rank them. This works with lots of things like cherry picking and than blind taste test the varieties of cherries, look up the strangest recipes and try them. Anything messy is always a big hit the baby pool of ooblek huge hit.

Pool Days. During COVID we bought an Intex pool and had an old fashioned back yard summer. Loved that too. But I miss going to the pool with my kids, getting ice cream.

We live in MI and we did a mini vacation each year exploring our state- Mackinaw Island, Silver Lake Dunes, places in the U.P., etc. We live very near Lake Huron so we had MANY beach days too!

I use to put together a game called “mystery”. I’d make about 10-15 different clues that they’d have to find. For example, the first clue would lead them to the second clue and so forth. At the end there would be a prize (a few dollars for the dollar tree, or candy, or bubbles, clay, etc). My daughter and the neighbor kids LOVED IT and they still bring it up often and they are in their 20s now.

We did beach vacations most of their childhood. Like 8 hr. drive with everyone caravaning, then sharing a house together (20-ish people). They are 19 & 21 and want to know when we will go again because it’s been 3 years since last trip.

Keep it simple, don’t overbook yourself. Enjoy the simple little things. It goes by real fast. I’m in my 16th summer this year with my twin boys. It flies.

My kids are now 17.19. And 21. They turned our yard into the neighborhood baseball/whiffle ball field. It wasn’t a big yard or anything. But they played every day with the neighborhood kids. Also hiking different state/national parks in our area. My kids often say “they had the best childhood”. And it was all free to nearly free.
