I spent days teaching a 3D-printed robot duck to walk. Most of that time, it was falling over. It’s my own build of the Open Duck Mini. The open-source, BDX-inspired biped created by Antoine Pirrone. The whole thing is 3D-printed and runs on hobby-grade servos instead of industrial actuators, which is what makes it buildable on a normal budget and also what makes it so hard to get walking. The hard part wasn’t the printing or the assembly. It was the sim-to-real gap. A gait that walks perfectly in MuJoCo hits real-world joint slop, servo lag, and a center of mass that won’t sit still, and just before you know it, the duck face plants into the floor. It took me 40+ calibration passes before it could take three steps without tipping! What the build came down to: • 3D-printed chassis • Per-joint offset calibration (where most of the pain lived) • Policy training in simulation (MuJoCo / Isaac Lab) • Build guide + docs via Tnkr • A lot of failed walks Real hardware. Real failures. Real progress.
