@jeffrogerscoaching: "Something Betsy a while back during a podcast interview that I did with her really resonated with me. She talked about how difficult it can be to trust people who present themselves as having it all figured out. The perfect marriage. The perfect communication. The perfect life. For a lot of people, that doesn't feel inspiring. It feels unreachable. Because when you're struggling in your own relationship, listening to someone who acts like they've never had a challenge can make you wonder if what they're teaching is even possible for real people. That's one reason Tina and I have always shared our story openly. We haven't had a perfect marriage. We've had seasons where we were disconnected. Seasons where communication wasn't working. Seasons where we had to take a hard look at ourselves and make changes. What gives me confidence in the work we teach isn't that we've avoided challenges. It's that we've lived them. We've done the work. We continue to do the work. And we've seen firsthand what happens when two people commit to growing instead of quitting. One thing I've believed for a long time is this: Be careful who you take advice from. If someone is coaching relationships, look at the relationships they've built. If they're teaching communication, pay attention to how they communicate. Not because anyone has to be perfect. Nobody is. But because experience matters. People don't need another expert telling them what should work. They need someone who can honestly say, "I've been where you are, and here's what helped us get through it."
