@abbyrodmanpsychotherapy: Remember the last time you were driving slowly in traffic because you didn’t know where you were going and your slow speed was annoying the drivers around you? Cognitively, you understood why the other drivers might be annoyed. But emotionally, you really didn’t care because you didn’t want to miss your next turn because you were driving too fast. Consistently not caring how your actions affect others is a trait of narcissism. Narcissists may know why you’re hurt or bothered, but they can’t allow themselves to care. Especially when it comes to asking them to take responsibility or accountability for their behaviors. The narcissist will resist anything that makes them feel shame. And your pain has the potential to make them feel shame.
I would relate this to the quote that I’ve seen floating online.
“If we went back to when we first met and I told you everything you did to me without telling you who did it….you would hate that person.”
There lies the cognitive dissonance. They can express empathy towards others for others when it doesn't threaten their “reality.” However, because they can’t actually see or understand their own harm doings…that ends up being the bigger wound to us.

He would push me to the point where I would explode and say vile things. I always went bs k and apologized but I feel shame and guilt around that. But living 30 years with a covert narcissist is hell Sad thing is I had no idea til just a few years ago what I was dealing with and that wasn’t crazy.

The pre-condition of empathy is truth. A pathological narcissist is devoid of empathy. With a sadistic core, the more they hurt you the more they feel. They want you dead.

And I think it connects to your example of the friend in the sense that they feel vindicated in their abuse because they are a perpetual victim, you deserve their abuse because you’ve slighted them in some way. I think in their mind you deserve to be hurt by them hence the reason they don’t feel any empathy for their victims
