@natsaboutlife: Can we like, stop going on holidays to ride horses that are way too small for us, because we got told in our own country we’re over the weight limits? Unless you really don’t care about the horses well being of course
A horse typically should have no more than 20% of its own body weight, which must include the rider plus all tack. Average horse is 1,000lbs. Western tack is ab 25-40 lbs so the rider should weigh no more than 160-170lbs

I’m fat and no, this isn’t fatphobia. I’ve been turned away from horseback riding (which is a bummer, I love horses) because they didn’t have a big enough horse for me, and that’s ok! I’d much rather look for a place with a big draft horse who can hold me, than put my weight on a poor 1k lb horse who can’t hold me. If a place won’t turn me away and still give me a ting horse, I’m concerned about all the other big people hurting that horse

I’ve lost 120 lbs and one of my main motivators is that I want to ride horses. Maybe a silly reason but it’s working! Only about 40 lbs left to lose!

i’m 260 lbs and i’d never dream of doing that to a horse, wdym some bigger people feel “victimized” by not being able to torture an animal?

And that's not mean to say. You aren't talking negatively about their body, you are talking negatively about how they selfishly hurt animals because they want to "have fun"

It’s not about your feelings. Horses aren’t machines put here to make you happy. If you’re too heavy, YOURE TOO HEAVY. When it comes to places that offer horseback riding for fun, most likely to people who don’t know how to actually ride, imagine adding the discomfort of that weight also being unbalanced and unnaturally shifting around on your spine/shoulders as you try to walk. A rider who isn’t too heavy can still cause damage and discomfort by not having a proper seat or equitation.

Even as a bigger girl THIS IS SO VALID!!!! I waited to sign up for lessons until I was under 200lbs and I still choose to ride an appropriate sized horse until I loose more. Ignorance is infact not bliss.

And no this is not being mean, it's a living animal that can only comfortably support a certain amount of weight.

I’m fat and one of my weight loss motivations is I want to ride horses. I would never subject an animal to my weight as it is.

The max is 250 for a really big horse if you’re over 250 there’s no horse that will be able to carry you comfortably I’m sorry and this is coming from a plus sized rider

I went on a trail ride in Gettysburg that had you sign up online with info like your weight and riding experience, and they matched you to a horse based on that info. There was a heavier set couple who were put on draft type horses. It was really nice to see both inclusiveness and animal welfare being taken into consideration. There was also a weight limit but I dont remember what the cutoff was.
