According to tradition, centuries ago monks covered a solid-gold Buddha statue with layers of plaster and stucco to protect it during a time of war. Over time, the people who knew its secret died, and the statue came to be regarded as an ordinary clay Buddha. Then, in 1955, while the statue was being moved to a new temple, it slipped and developed a crack. A monk noticed something shining beneath the surface. As the outer layer was carefully removed, workers discovered that the entire statue was made of solid gold—one of the largest gold Buddha statues in the world. What I love about this story isn’t just the history. It’s the reminder that what appears ordinary may not be ordinary at all. Sometimes the layers we judge most harshly—the walls, the caution, the armor, the ways we’ve adapted to survive—were once serving a purpose.
