@form.community: Presented in Paris in March 2007, Alexander McQueen’s Fall/Winter 2007 collection, In Memory of Elizabeth Howe, Salem 1692, drew inspiration from the Salem witch trials and the story of Elizabeth Howe, one of the twenty individuals executed during the hysteria. Rather than a historical reconstruction, McQueen approached the subject as a meditation on fear, persecution, and the enduring power of women in the face of collective suspicion. Victorian tailoring, military outerwear, and sharply structured silhouettes were juxtaposed with flowing gowns, feathered embellishments, lace veils, and references to mourning dress. Throughout the collection, garments moved between restraint and theatricality, reflecting the tension between accusation and defiance that underpinned the show’s narrative. A palette of black, ivory, crimson, and metallic gold reinforced the collection’s atmosphere of ritual and remembrance. Presented beneath a vaulted glass ceiling in Paris, the collection balanced historical reference with McQueen’s characteristic romanticism, transforming a dark chapter of history into an exploration of strength, survival, and transformation.
