@racistlightskin: Fun fact: Politically, the Alföld phenotype became important because Hungarian anthropologists used it to link the Magyar people to the Great Hungarian Plain and to the steppe conqueror elites of early Hungary, especially through older classifications like West Turanid and Homo sapiens pannonicus (Bartucz, 1938; Lipták, 1957; Henkey, 1992). After the Treaty of Trianon, the type became entangled in territorial and nationalist debates, as Hungarian scholars used Alföld/Turanid categories to argue for Magyar historical depth in disputed regions, while Romanian anthropologists promoted rival “Dacian” or “Carpathian” typologies to support Romanian continuity in Transylvania (Turda, 2007; Marius, 2010). But modern genetics complicates that older political use: ancient DNA shows that Avar and Hungarian Conquest-period elites did carry eastern steppe-related ancestry, while modern Hungarians are genetically much closer to neighboring Central Europeans, with only low Central or Inner Asian ancestry remaining overall (Csősz et al., 2016; Bíró et al., 2015; Maróti et al., 2022).
