I just started working with oil pastels. I bought a tiny sketch book to get over the “it has to be perfect” mindset. As an artist who has never felt comfortable with 2d art, it’s really helped!

I always use white to lighten! It’s more about balancing with the background and foreground, making sure you aren’t just adding white, but are adding colours that are warmer/cooler depending on what you’re painting. You can see the background in this is a cool blue and the foreground is cyan! Using cyan and magenta also helps saturation, it balances the muddy colours that red and blue can create together!

You have probably heard this before but NEVER use solid black, I find that it tends to suck the life out of an artwork and it is really difficult to give it dimension, instead try stick to blues, purples, browns and other darker colours. even when mixing shading colours I never mix black with any paint as it dulls the colour the same way that white sometime does.

im obsessed w bright orange background! and I use NOOO black. ever. literally ever. i have a dark blue and red that i use to make dark purple as the darkest value and dark blue as the nexg lightest. and I cant encourage it enough. never pure white - light yellow is highlight and dark purple is darkest. u can see my page if u think it'll look crazy but promise it won't!

pink is super fun and can make colors pop but it is not the best base to learn colors😳 i personally think burnt umber is the best neutral base to see true color🥰

This turned out great! You can use white to mix as long as you add a bit of another colour in with it! Aka add yellow when you’re painting warm like your tomatoes!
