A recent New York Times article highlighted a new study reporting that circulating (whole blood) NAD+ levels remain relatively stable with age in humans. That’s an interesting finding. But before we throw out decades of aging research, it’s important to understand what the study does and does not show. What it DOES show: ✅ Whole blood NAD+ levels may not decline significantly with age. ✅ Blood NAD+ may not be a reliable biomarker of biological aging. ✅ We should be careful about making broad claims that are not supported by human data. What it DOES NOT show: ❌ That NAD+ is irrelevant to aging. ❌ That NAD+ does not decline in specific tissues (like skin, muscle and brain) ❌ That the thousands of studies on NAD+, sirtuins, CD38, mitochondrial function, and aging biology are suddenly invalid. The real question has always been: What is happening inside the tissues and inside the mitochondria that matter most for aging? Muscle. Brain. Liver. Skin. Mitochondria. Many of the foundational papers in the field suggest NAD+ declines in specific tissues, particularly in animal models and age-related disease states. The human story is more complex and continues to evolve. This is how science works. One new paper doesn’t overturn an entire field. It becomes part of the evidence, and then we reevaluate what we think we know. We learn more, we get better, we refine. As a scientist, that’s the part I find most interesting. #longevity #healthyaging #mitochondria #NAD #Science Educational purposes only. Not medical advice.
