@curiousnoor: Everyone tells Americans to stop saying soccer. Few know that the term started elsewhere… #Soccer #football #worldcup2026 #footballhistory
it’s funny because it applies to a lot of things that people consider “american” is just the original british term that we never let go and britain changed

That’s also why American Football is called Football - it’s a descends from the Rugby code of Football.

I call it soccer because I grew up that way. I will call it football while speaking Dutch because that’s what they call it.

I think people only have problem with because we call American football, football. Otherwise I believe I wouldn’t be such a debate

Ireland calls it soccer. Probably as a slight to the English but still they called it soccer when I was last there.

9 times put of 10 if america and the us use diffrent words for the same think its the uk that changed it ... 10th time is edge cases like Aluminum/Aluminium which was caused by a TYPO in a research paper not caught for a decade

I have family who live in Ireland (born and raised there) and when I visited them, they said that a lot of people in Ireland call it soccer as well since Ireland has Gaelic football, which is often shortened to football.

That doesn't make it the original word if it was still called football prior. I don't like how you are acting like we just decided to jack the work football like it was random.

I went to a Spanish immersion school in the U.S. and so we called soccer “futbol” and American football “football” (the difference is the accent of the word)

this is the same thing for several American terms that differ is that we just stuck with a term that England evolved away from.

And whenever England switched back to football we already had our football going.

It's sort of like the imperial system. They forced us to use it, couldn't get us the conversions for metric, and now judge us for using it because it wouldn't make sense to change by the time we got the conversions

Also, originally football referred to sports played on foot, in contrast to sports the wealthy played on horses.

Also, by the time the UK started calling it football, the NFL had already been established in the US!

Not to mention our football was already established so why would we have two footballs?

In my country we have a different word for soccer, should we also stop calling it whatever we call it in our language too? Or any country that had its own name for this game?
