my one complaint of the movie is how they didn’t touch on his relationship with his students like they do in the book. like they were literally his sole reason to want to keep studying astrophage, because he wanted to save them from a doomed world. they were literally HIS KIDS.

This is why the “you don’t even have a dog” speech pissed me off so much. Sure he doesn’t have a partner or someone at home to look after. But he takes care of his children every day. He is the middle school science teacher that kids rely on, the one they will look back on with admiration and awe. His students are why he got on this project in the first place. He wants his children to have a future.
