I used to work in catering for extremely high end events. The types of small private events that could hire a politician to speak, or that celebrities or heads of state would attend. The donors that funded the zoo would have cheetahs at their Christmas party and flamingos and penguins wandering around. The amount of food left over would be staggering. We’re talking about prime rib, lobster, truffle this and that, caviar, French pastry flown in from Paris etc. it would often all end up in the trash. They would make the staff throw it all away. Not the leftovers from the buffet that had been out. The backup replenishment food that had never been out of the kitchen. One of the world offenders was Wolfgang Puck.

Where i work, the servers only get 50% off. As a line cook, as long as management isn't looking, they eat for free.

A free meal absolutely, maybe not the most expensive one lol but treat your employees with respectful and make sure they have energy during the busy times. Like is a burger or sandwich really gonna hurt your profit?

i worked as a dish washer at 17 and that free meal every night i worked was literally all i got to eat that day. it was life saving.

Number 4: Quality control. If they're eating the food regularly, they'll probably care more and notice anything off about the product and/or pay more attention to the details when preparing it.

My job started free meals during covid as a perk. I actually had an employee tell me part of the reason he took the job was the free lunch.

I only get 50% off, so I rarely eat the food. The owner's kids and their girlfriends eat for free though.

I worked as a dishwasher and got any sandwich for free, unlimited fries, and all the fountain drink I wanted. looks better to have the staff sitting out back eating the food from the restaurant than eating somebody else's food.

Trust me if you’re not giving your staff a free meal, you’ll be giving them a free meal without you knowing. May as well get credit for it, make them appreciate you and also there are a lot of people making minimum wage living in food insecure households and a free meal every shift or being sent home with extras that can’t be sold can really go a long way

I worked at a high end restaurant that was corporate owned in West Hollywood and they wouldn’t even let us order something for half off. So greedy and just weird.

Worked in a kitchen, everyone got a free lunch during their shift. The cooks/chefs all loved making food for staff because they’re basically family and you actually get to see someone enjoy your work instead of the plate disappearing out the front and only knowing if someone complains.

3rd generation owner here. Rosco's Burger Inn, Texas. Open 71years. We've never charged our staff for lunch. They also stay on clock during lunch. Just started offering supplemental health insurance this year! Gotta love the people we have as staff!! "Seven days without a Rosco burger makes one weak. "
