The update to the story is that the server was in Direct contact with the customer and the customer was smart enough to lock his card. It wasn’t that there was insufficient funds. It’s that the customer was protecting his money and from what I understand, the customer is going to directly get the money to the server. Everyone needs to boycott Olive Garden.

Not true. The receipt clearly shows an authorization code, which means the amount is being held on the card until the restaurant batches out for the day. If there wasn’t enough credit or money available on the card, it would’ve been declined. I hope she gets way more.

Common sense! Restaurants run the credit card once, then the customer adds a tip and signs the paper. Then the server or a manager reauthorize the credit card AFTER typically a customer has left for any tips. A $700 tip, not at all surprised if declined by the credit card company or the bank flagged the charge. Further, customers can **dispute** charges hence, is why Olive Garden initially wanted to issue the employee 20% of the tip and wait the other 80%. We also do not know all the facts only what has been provided by the corporation and employee.
