@growthaccount007: A few things that genuinely help: * Open a private bank account he cannot access. * Start building emergency cash in small amounts, even if it feels slow. * Gather your important documents quietly: * ID * Social Security card * birth certificate * bank info * car title * insurance * Reconnect with people you trust, even casually. * Look into work, side income, or remote income before announcing anything. * Do not reveal your full exit plan early if control escalates when independence is mentioned. * Keep screenshots or notes of controlling financial behavior if needed later for housing, custody, or legal support. If you’re in the U.S., The National Domestic Violence Hotline also helps with financial abuse specifically — not just physical abuse. They can help with exit planning, emergency resources, transportation, shelter options, and safety planning. And honestly, one of the biggest mindset shifts is this: Needing access to money for your own transportation, food, or life is not “asking for too much.” Adults in equal relationships are not managed like children requesting allowance.

All of these comments not understanding it, just know it isn't about money it's about control.

As a victim advocate (certified as well through DULUTH) this is a form of economic abuse. It starts as doing “solids” then saying “you don’t need a job” so the victim has to rely on their partner for anything financial. Example: If she wants to leave him one day and move, she will be unable to due to not having any money or self sufficient means of income. Hope this helps.

Financial abuse is buying a bag of chips and then being yelled at because they could’ve used the 3 dollars for gas

Comments are so weird. Yeah you’re getting gas for free, but you don’t have freedom to buy things you want without reporting it to anyone else or getting approval for it. Later on you’ll want a small thing that would bring you joy and then you’ll feel so small you cant even buy it on your own if they dont give you the money for it

This is why I can never do the stay at home thing without an income 😭. This just feels like a parent-child relationship & even then, parents are way better. I dislike being controlled with everything in me

That’s crazy. My wife has access to all my bank accounts and every cent I’ve ever made since we got together. If she ever thinks we’re not making enough I get a second job to balance it out.

Sounds like... sounds to me like he was kind of trying to do you a solid? Dang, my spouse says "Hey I will not only pay to fill up your tank, I will ALSO run the errand for you."
Perhaps this is your perception and his is very different. Better to talk to him than tiktok.
