Even with these side plates you sides heart and lungs are still exposed. Those are only 6” tall. At best it protects your lower stomach and intestinal tract.

If you're wearing plate armor that's true but almost all vests used by law enforcement wrap around the sides

If you are in law enforcement I would encourage you to check out the FRAS wrap around torso coverage system it offers 3+ protection for your torso and sides.
