It's called "Braindance", because Richard D. James thought it would be funny to coin his own equally pretentious name for the genre, as a response to the music media coming up with these pretentious labels such as "IDM". He wasn't being serious, but it caught on because people love that kind of thing when it comes to labelling genres.

love moderat (modeselektor + apparat) and always cringed at idm as a term. braindance is better, introspectronic is the best term I've heard. gita - moderat and Rusty Nails - moderat remain some of my favorite songs of all time

Aphex the goat!! Richard invented the term for rephlex records back in the day and some American when the AI warp series was getting shipped over for America via Sire records, he coined the term IDM. Aphex Twin thought it was pretentious as all. The Braindance collection is such a sick comp tho
