@dli0031.builds: my wife and i fostered 71 kids over twenty-six years. she passed in 2019 and i stopped taking placements, but i remember every single one of them. i'm seventy-four. my granddaughter set this up for me. i'm trying to find one boy. people always asked how we did it — how you let a kid go after a year, after three years, after you've taught them to ride a bike and sat up through the nightmares. you don't get used to it. you just decide a kid being loved for a little while is better than not at all. every kid who came through our house built a birdhouse with me on the workbench in the garage. their choice of color. their name carved in the bottom. i've still got the workbench. i don't have the birdhouses. they took those with them. that was the point. there was a boy we had for two years. came to us at seven, didn't speak for the first month. by the end he never stopped talking. he painted his birdhouse blue because he said it matched our front door and he wanted to remember which house was the safe one. he got placed back with family in another state in 2003 and we lost the thread, the way you do. blue house. blue birdhouse. i think about him more than is probably fair to the other seventy. don't read this sad. i had the best life a man could ask for and most of it walked through my front door scared and walked out a little less scared. i just want to know they made it. that's all an old foster dad wants. to know they made it. so if you were a foster kid in ohio between 1994 and 2019, and you remember a workbench and a birdhouse with your name carved in the bottom — that was our house. you were ours for however long we got you. and if you're the boy who painted his blue to match the safe house: it's still my front door color. come knock on it. twenty-six years. seventy-one kids. one workbench. i remember every one of you. #asim #fostercare #fosterdad #ifyouseethis #youwereours

Foster kid here. I too had a safe place in one of my homes. When we left they gave me a picture of their house with their address written on the back. I was almost 10 and now just turned 42 I still have that picture. When I was 20 one random Halloween we (my sister and I) decided to try and find the house. We showed up with my sisters 2 kids trick or treating. They welcomed us in and 22 years later we have spent almost every Halloween at their house since. They are grandma and grandpa to our kids, have been at birthday parties, graduations and my youngest son has their last name as his middle name. We visit 3 to 4 times a year and it's still the place I feel the safest. Know that those are not forgotten memories and the impact you had on a life that was fragile. Bless you and your late wife.

My parents ( EMT and SAHM ) had 4 kids of their own when they decided to “ temporarily” take in a family friends child ( 5 yrs old ) who was placed in the system. He was so starved for attention that he started calling her mom by day 3. My mother was the epitome of a loving mother. My parents legally adopted him at 8yrs old. On his 16th bday, our mom handed him a check to buy his first car. It was every single penny the state sent my parents for taking care of him. She never touched a dime of it. 😢 RIP mom. ❤️

I am a former foster kid. I recently just knocked on the door of the one foster home who loved me and made me feel safe, out of the 33 different homes I was in, there was only one. One safe place, one where I belonged. It was amazing catching up with them, and we are planning a big BBQ for this summer.

As a new foster mom, reading all these comments has me in tears. Our foster placement came to us at 8 days old. We have had her 3 months and she will likely be with us the first year of her life. I know she won’t remember us but I will remember and cherish every moment we had with her.

My mom fostered and adopted, she fostered until we lost her. At her service about half way through someone slipped in the church and sat down, after a while they stepped up and quietly grabbed a rosary, I had a lot set up for her service. At the end everyone was talking to me and I walked over to him and I thanked him for coming, I didn’t recognize him he looked so different. He quietly said “I wasn’t with her long, but she brought me to hot topic and let me pick out cool stuff and a backpack, no one had ever did that. When I asked why she was spending money on me she replied that all kids deserve to feel cool and have things they like, I still have everything she got me that day, over a decade later” he then showed me he had a spiked belt on under his jacket, it was missing a lot of studs and he said “builds personality” (something mom said because she never remembered the phrase builds character) this child met my mom and she bought him clothes that fit how he wanted to be seen, interests he had and he never forgot feeling seen.

Former foster kid. I was with a family that owned a motel. They were from India. They took me in when my family grandmother. busted for being homeless and I was covered in bruises. That was the first time I ever had a real family. They wanted to adopt me but social services wouldn't let them because I am wyte. Said it was cultural differences. I got sent back to my dad and grandmother. I talk about them all the time even now at 42.. I was the happiest little girl in the world with that Hindu family. Cultural differences be damned.

Wife and I were foster parents for 8 years. We had a little dude with us for 15 months, he got to go back to his mom 6 years ago. Mom refuses to take us off his school contact list, “just in case”.

Adopted kid here. My parents fostered 67 kids in Missouri. I was one of them, and they ended up adopting me. To my parents, no Kid was hopeless. I watched my dad one time get a phone call from a former foster child, who ended up in Texas and didn’t know what to do because she didn’t feel safe. He told her give him 20 minutes, and hung up the phone. Called her back 10 later and said a cab was on its way to her location. He had booked a hotel room for her and her sister for the evening. They made it to the hotel. Then my dad and I loaded up the Truck and drove through the night. Picked them up and brought them back to Missouri. Just because that’s who my dad was. He cared about every single one of those kids as his own. I’ve watched him drive hours out of his way to attend weddings and funerals and to help fix broken things for all sorts of former foster kids. You never stop caring about them.

15 years ago I was ready to quit. A chemical misfire in my brain has me constantly wanting to punch my card. The only thing that kept me alive is responsibility to people. So I went all in an took on more responsibility... I started foster care. My wife and I take in teen boys. Some days it feels like you're just a flop house and you aren't making a difference but last Thanksgiving a past child, now 22, called and said "you said there was always a place at your table?" It's now my favorite Thanksgiving. I've never regretted a day that I've been useful to someone.

I’m fostering a 14 year old SA survivor right now. I never intended at 61 to have a child back in my home. But circumstances just happened and here I am. I was going to retire next February. Now I’m going to work another 4 years to continue to provide her the first home she has ever had. God works in mysterious ways, I feel alive again for the first time in years.

I was 14 scared….rejected by my mother who stayed with my abuser. They told her… “your husband and daughter can’t be in the same house”. She said flatly glaring at me… “well then she goes.” I fell to my knees and cried…. I was terrified when I went to their home. My foster mom let me morn and cry for three days. I barely remember those days. On the third day she came in made me get dressed dry my eyes and go shop for clothes. That day I’ll never forget what she told me. You had time to be sad., and it’s ok to feel that. But at the end of the day only you can help you be strong. You can choose to let your circumstances define your future….. or you can write your own story and prove that there is more to life and not let this hold you back. I never let anything in life be enough to keep me there. Charlene I’ll never forget you!

We all watched mom 🔫 dad. Watched her go to prison. And off we went to strangers. An elderly couple whose names I don't remember. I never forgot their kindness and patience with 7 scared kids. And love like we'd never experienced.

Foster kid here ❤️thank you for all you and your wife did. I can define the point my life changed from “ I’m not gonna live long enough to graduate this year” to “ I wonder what I could be in college “ and it was in the livingroom of a 2 story home that belonged to the best couple I’d ever met. Not perfect . Just real people with real love. 3 kids of their own and at the time 3 of us foster kids as well. I remember watching the mom set pasta salad on the able and look up and smile at me from the kitchen and for the first time realizing there was safety and a future. I’m 32 now. Graduated college. Own my own business. Have 6 boys a mix of biological and gifted to me. And every day I am thankful for people like you. I hope you know the hard days and the hard kids were worth it. Your impact will last their whole lives.
