This triggered me. Let me explain. My mom used to do this with me and I feel that because of this I was the child that understood her financial strain the most and because I understood, I got to be the kid that got less. I never asked for too much, was content with what she gave me because I knew how much it costs her. On the other hand my brothers could ask for whatever they wanted, branded clothes, phones and whatever they wanted without feeling sorry for her and they got them. This also taught me her way of financial planning which was very poor and I'm only now starting unlearning some of those bad habits. My nervous system around money was shaped by her financial decisions and its costing me everything in ny adult life. I am aware of it now and working on it. I've always been very responsible with money though because of this but I treat "receiving" & "abundance" with fear and anxiety.I hope this helps someone else as they practice what you are advising. Solid advice though because I've always appreciated the value of things because of this

My mom used to even show us her payslip she was a waitress at a hotel and didn't get paid a lot but still saved and managed to take me to school. I learnt so much from her

You are right, my son was shocked that we spent R700 on the night he demanded takeaways. I could see that he regretted. But i was like it’s okay once in a while. Otherwise we would have done something more fun. Now he knows. Sometimes i give him a phone to fill up the cart for groceries shopping.

I am triggered 😤 my mother taught me how to withdraw money from an ATM but she never taught me financial Literacy and how to handle money I received over 100k years ago for inheritance and I blew all of it.😌
