@itssophieblank: Just a German girl wanting to drive to Lidl for a big girl grocery shop every now and then… but seriously, do I just go onto @AutotraderUK ? My 3 rules are: 1. Used car only 2. £7,000 max 3. No financing The one thing I know is that I don’t want to go into debt just to afford a bigger or nicer car. Loans are currently at around 7% and that just seems like a waste of money. It’s definitely a dad question but neither of my two dads have any clue about buying second hand cars in the UK. If you have any experiences or recommendations, I’d love to hear about them 🫶 🏷️ car shopping, buying a car, car insurance, buying a used car, car finance, buying a car outright, buying a cheap car #PersonalFinance #carfinance #carfinanceuk #buyingacar #usedcarsuk

As someone who have been driving for 7 years now I would genuinely say buying a very old car that had a lot of mileage can ruin your life and start breaking everyday, there is a tricky balance between not spending too much and spending too little on a car that would make your life hell. Be very careful

We bought our first car (also immigrants here), became an autotrader expert over the course of a month - worked out great! I did a ton of research and talked to everyone I could. We bought a 2015 automatic hyundai i20 for £7300 - it's running really well and we're so happy with it!

Autotrader is fine. Vetting your chosen car will be key inc check its legal status, ensure it hasn’t been written off before. Use the free valuation check to ensure you’re paying market rate. Before purchase, get car insurance quotes and save them if you do decide to purchase. Do an in person inspection of the car before paying full amount. Be prepared to travel to find the right car for you. Goodluck

You will need insurance before driving the car away, although temporary insurance is an option if you just need to get it home. Auto Trader is one of the best places to buy cars in the UK, and you can filter for private sellers, price ranges, location, engine size etc. Gumtree is another popular option. Make sure to check the MOT history, via vdi check but it does cost. Good Luck!

probably out of the budget, but I would also look into salary sacrificing for a new car!
