it is ABSOLUTELY romantic love, there is nothing platonic about the way they treated each other. it was unhealthy and codependent, but undoubtedly romantic. the actors confirmed it + sooo many lines hinting at it.

everyone saying "there can be love without romance!" yes, there can be. but thats not how 12 and clara were. the doctor was in love with clara. remember 12s first ever episode! "I'm not your boyfriend clara" "I never thought you were?" "I didnt say it was your mistake." I may be quoting a bit wrong but that was the gist. the doctor was in love with her, just like he was with rose.

For everyone saying that there was never anything romantic between them, did you forget when the Doctor said to her “I’m not your boyfriend” and Clara responded “I never thought you were”, that he then said “I never said it was your mistake”? This is CLEARLY the Doctor saying that he thought they were in a romantic relationship, at least up until that moment!! Yes, she was his best friend, but they both had feelings for each other that went beyond friendship.

I always thought The Doctor subconsciously changed into someone so superficially old looking partially to distance himself romantically from Clara. Because he fell in love with her, but he has learned that one of the most dangerous and destructive things is if his companion falls in love with him.
