@mks6688: The Late-Night Rehearsal Room In 1999, the band was operating out of a small rehearsal space at Hollywood and Vine in Los Angeles. Mike Shinoda decided to lock himself in the room overnight to focus intensely on the music. Surrounded by a rough neighborhood filled with junkies and prostitutes at the time, he programmed the beats, crafted the iconic signature piano loop, and wrote the rap verses completely before morning. When drummer Rob Bourdon arrived the following day, Shinoda played it for him, and Bourdon immediately flipped out over how good it was. [1]
