In 2022, something unusual happened in Edo State. Mrs. Helen Utabor, a traffic policewoman serving in Edo State, stopped a driver for a traffic offence, likely for beating a traffic light. She got into the vehicle and instructed the driver to drive to the police station. But instead of obeying, the driver sped off with her inside, heading to an unknown location. When Mrs. Helen Utabor realized the driver was taking her somewhere she didn’t know, she began shouting for help. The driver recorded the incident and later posted it online. In the viral video, Helen was heard screaming in distress: “Help me, help me. He dey carry me go where I no know oooooo.” The clip went viral in 2022 because of how dramatic and almost “poetic” her cry for help sounded. Nigerians quickly turned it into a meme and used it to describe anything that felt out of control or headed in a bad direction. The audio was later sampled by Asake in his 2022 song “Peace Be Unto You”, and again by Khaid & Boy Spyce in “Carry Me Go”. DJ YK also used it in a mixtape. In 2023, reports said Helen was bedridden after being hit by a vehicle while directing traffic in Edo. She needed ₦1.5 million for treatment, and Asake later donated ₦5 million to help her.
