@packleaderdogs: How To Stop A Dog From Barking At The Window First, we have to understand that a dog barking is normal and part of how they communicate. What becomes problematic is when a dog's barking becomes obsessive and/or out of control. We want our dog to bark to alert the pack/family that someone else is on the territory. But we need to have the ability to give our dog's direction to stop barking and let us, the leader/parent-figure to take over and decide what to do with the "stranger." We have to be practicing leadedship throughout our dogs lives, not just in the moment we want them to stop a behavior. Many trainers also give flawed advice to people trying to overcome excessive barking by training things like "go to your bed." In theory, this sounds good but it confuses the dog because they are never told to calm down before going to the dog bed. There's a fire (excitement) at the window and they're telling you to put the fire somewhere else. That looks like your dog unsettled on the bed, trying to get off, barking, etc. Instead, put the fire (excitement) out at the window, THEN you can give your dog direction. Use a leash if needed for practice and ideally have friends/family come to practice with. I'm always asked, "how do I stop them at the window?" It depends on you, your individual dog and the relationship. Love you❤️

This may be dumb - when my dog does this I let him see me go to window and then say “thank you I see them” in a calm voice and he clams down then I pet him

Shut up and watch. That has been working. In any anxiety moment it is sit down and calmly watch until the threat is gone. then we do treat or a short play time. Corso he is becoming a very well behaved watcher.

Hi, so I have a super important question for you. My fiance has medicine resistant Epilepsy & I've been looking into getting him a service dog (not to alert him of an incoming seizure, because those are EXTREMELY RARE), but to help him afterwards either by alerting, or to kind of keep him safe. Especially when he's postictal & is basically conscious/unconscious. He has Gran Mal seizures (tonic-clonic) or the really severe violent ones. Like he can be walking & then has a seizure & will dead drop. These types of dogs START at $20k & that's only IF the dog is compatible. Mostly these dogs are Goldens, but with his seizures, I'm afraid that type of dog isn't strong enough to maybe get under his head to stop him from more brain trauma...or if he begins to have the onset of SUDEP & would need to keep his brain as stimulated as possible so his brain finally remembers to start breathing again.
We're both disabled (mine is physical) so this is a massive investment & some of the places I've looked into are literally doing this with puppies.
While I can find & bring my own dog to be trained, it's not always a guarantee, plus it's still $20K...do you know which type of dog would be the best for this type of situation.
I mean *I* already have PTSD from all of the times he's had a seizure while I'm there, but especially if I'm not. Like one time I ran to the store to buy cough meds & I was gone maybe 20 mins, by the time I came home I called for him & he wasn't in bed (it was 2am & I couldn't sleep cuz of my coughing), I found him in the bathroom with his head in the toilet like maybe half an inch from the water. That happened 9 years ago, and I'm terrified of him being out of my sight now. He was literally being held up by his neck...
I just feel like he'd have more freedom & I know I'd definitely feel less anxious if I knew he had a dog that was there to protect him in some way. Even to alert ME.
Do you have any suggestions or know of any reputable places who train service dogs specifically for Epilepsy? He doesn't qualify for any free ones or discounted ones cuz he's an adult & this looks like a 1 shot kind of deal.

Because i can't control who passes by, is it ok to keep a leash on during the day? i have a 4lb 1 year chichi, so i would use a thin short leash. otherwise she runs to other rooms and is hard to catch this little devils. any suggestions?

because our dog losses his damn mind with his anxiety, our trainer taught us to pull the leash to move him away from the window. once he's calm go back to the window and if he reacts again, pull away until he's calm. once we go back to the window amd he stays calm then praise him and reward so he learns if I'm calm I get to stay at the window

My daughter's 2 year dog will bark just standing in front of us when we are sitting in the chair. I take him outside, so he has me trained. How to stop that kind of barking?

My dog does this but only for some dogs. I use Thank you and quiet and reward when she is calm or when she looks away....it's been a slow work in progress but I think it is getting better

My young boy is learning this. He’ll bark & all I have to day is his name first, he then turns & looks at me & I say no no, no yakking there’s no need for that & he listens for the rest of the day. Next day he will sometimes do it but sometimes he’ll look at me when he gets to the window & I say no yakking & he doesn’t bark once.

better to acknowledge the warning, check to see what is outside, then reward for warning you, mine stop barking as soon as I get up to check and then they settle for a reward, no reward unless someone is actually outside 😁 they are your best alarm system for intruders, never teach them not to warn you 😔 bad advice

Isn't this just diverting them from the outside stimulus? How does this train them to not have that response in the first place?

One thing that’s worked really well for me is asking my dog to go get an object or a toy. It’s taught her a displacement behavior, and now, whenever she starts feeling wound up, she can go and get something to self soothe

Makes a lot of sense thank you! We had our dog go on place when guests came into our home and that seemed to just stress him out more.

Mine is very different. I have a 130 lb rottie. He doesn’t bark when he sees them outside or when someone knocks on the door. He is definitely reading them but if he hears someone talking, that’s a completely different story.

My chuihuahua is barking when someone makes noise outside the window ( i live in Germany right beside a street so of course people walking on the side walk). And he’s never stops barking. He’s not barking when we go outside, beside that issue he’s well trained and is listening to me. But I don’t know how to fix that problem. He’s turning now 4 and I wanna fix that problem.
