Well even when night gowns were super common, you would put on a dressing gown on top if you needed to interact with people in the morning

they are trying to reference that in georgian/victorian era they had "house clothes" and "outside clothes" because people mistake the "house clothes" for "sleep clothes" ana pyjamas. they're still wrong and it's so fun to see 😂

also, fascinatingly, lingerie and sleepwear became inspo for general fashion in the 90s and early 2000s (think 13 Going On 30 and Friends), but it still wasn't acceptable to wear the actual clothes you'd worn to sleep out and about. In fact, both those shows have jokes based on the literal premise that characters were fashionable night wear as day wear, but because it's *actual* nightwear, it misses the social mark. that's the joke - it's not a slip dress inspired by nightwear, it's actual nightwear and that's not appropriate in the same way.

Important correction, because it was the opposite - in many centuries. a big part of hygiene was to change underwear frequently (to keep clean, avoid smells, protect outerwear from sweat and oils) and outerwear was less changed visually due to how high a cost outer clothing was (to the point where some were inherited along family generations if particularly in good conditions), which is why we have concepts of normal day wear vs Sunday best, etc

Growing up in a poor country pajamas for the older generation was basically underwear so no, no one would think going outside undressed. As kid would have pajamas sets but during winter we often use it like a base layer so again like underwear

Only time I've worn pijamas outside has been when I was so sick I could literally not change into anything before going to the ER, and even then I did that mainly as child.

My husband hates my rule against pajamas in public. Like I won’t go out with him even to Walmart in pajamas unless it’s a worse case scenario

if pajamas started as outerwear, that just means people didn't sleep in it.

pajama literally comes from the persian word that means inside clothes. In persian culture we don't do pajamas only as sleepwear but they are our indoor clothing. to not bring the dirt and everything from outside all around the house. so day are our everyday wear but only for inside.
so in a way they are everyday wear.😅

i used to go to the US a lot when I was a kid, and people never wore their pijamas outside (this was during the 80s and 90s). I'm surprised that it has evolved to that now. In my home country, no one would ever dare go out in their pijamas, especially to work!

In the balkans we sometimes go to the corner market in our pjs, but it s a must to have a robe or a jacket.
The distance should take more than 10 min to walk
