It is astonishing to imagine how different those oceans once were. They were ecosystems shaped by millions of years of evolution, where nature continuously produced forms of life that still seem almost unbelievable today. Perhaps it’s reassuring that most of those giants are no longer swimming through our oceans. At the same time, it’s impossible not to feel a little sadness knowing that we will never witness that extraordinary world with our own eyes. Yet the ocean continues to keep its secrets. Scientists discover new marine species every year, explore previously unseen depths, and uncover evidence of long-lost life.
