“While much of medieval Europe wallowed in filth and ignorance, the Muslims of Al-Andalus transformed Spain into a beacon of civilization — building over 300 public baths in Córdoba alone, introducing advanced hygiene, sanitation, science, and learning at a time when bathing was rare and feared in Europe. They treated Christians and Jews with relative tolerance as protected dhimmis, allowing a golden age of coexistence and cultural flourishing. Yet in 1492, after the fall of Granada and broken promises of tolerance, the Spanish Catholic Monarchs replied with forced conversions, the Inquisition, mass expulsions of Jews and Moriscos, replacing centuries of multicultural advancement with religious persecution and uniformity.”
