I thought I understood subnetting until I had to carve out a /28 subnet from a /19 network. At first, I just picked a random block that had the correct number of hosts for a /28, but I ran into problems when I tried to configure it. The issue was that I hadn’t chosen a valid network address. For a /28 subnet, the network address must align with the subnet boundary. In other words, the last octet must be a multiple of 16.

Sometimes I like to use a /23 instead of a /24 just to fuck with people. Embrace the mayhem and watch their heads explode when a x.x.x.255 address is a valid usable IP.

naahh im tier2 and I use subnet calcu 😂😂 but ask me when Im studying for ccna even the hardest subnetting you can think of, i can answer it 😂😂😂

Thank you for that. I had issues memorizing subnetting in my CCNA classes because our professor kept saying, “You guys must memorize it,” and he explained it in such a complicated way that it honestly became a headache. Then I watched a 5-minute YouTube video about subnetting, exactly the way you explained it, and I realized it was actually easy and not that hard. Sometimes professors or people teaching a topic make it more complicated than it needs to be.

It helps to know it inside out. Was that /19 a 224 or a 252? It’s the difference between a long call or a short call.
