People go above and beyond when they trust their boss actually has their best interest at heart.

Wow. You work 20 extra hrs?? Why arent you concerned that'll make you look bad? I'd be scared management would start questioning the effectiveness of my time management skills if I'm consistently needing to work extra hours to get my tasks completed. Its not a good look...

If you can’t get the work done in 40 hours, do you need Time Management training?

I always laugh at the idea of "working hard to get ahead". Like, when she says "I guess you just don't have any desire to get promoted", I can only imagine the shell shock when I'd pop back with "Yes, that's correct. I'm happy in my current roll, and have no desire for it to be changed. That's why I interviewed for this specific position"

Also literally, maybe she's just not interested in being promoted. That's normal valid & ok too!

I went "above and beyond" until I burned out and quit. Then I found out that during all that time, I was making less money than people who worked there half as long and with 1/4 of the responsibilities. Never again.

I once told a supervisor that I was only going to work my contracted hours which were 8-4 but would be willing to discuss changes to my benefits package to reflect the additional overtime hours

I learned an important lesson in my first job in the real world. I worked tons of overtime, sometimes half my check was overtime. Did great work and worked hard. The manager told me she wished she had more of me. Then when the races came out, I got the same as everyone else because it just wasn’t anything else in the budget so we all got 3%. I immediately look for a new job. If I’m your top performer and everybody else gets 3% like me then why should I be the top performer?

Glad my company doesn't expect this. We get to set our own hours as long as we are consistent with those hours. I work 7:30-4:15.

I showed my “loyalty” working 60 hrs a week, was on-call 24/7, and plus another 10 hrs commuting for a past job. Did this for 7 years. When I was ready to move to the next position by supervisor said they wanted me to manage projects, I replied I have been doing that for 7 years - his reply “We actually don’t know all you do but you keep the clients happy so keep doing it” I was dumbfounded. I quit the next week.

I switched jobs 18 months ago. if you compare my hourly rate to my former coworker I make more per hour than her simply because I only work 35 hours per week (full time but unpaid hour for lunch) and she works 40. it works out to be about $3 more per hour for me. do not do unpaid or underpaid work.

one of my friends was actually threatened with termination because he was working long hours. they didn't see that he was taking on extra tasks, just that he was staying late.

I went above and beyond for 7 years and got laid off, I now down go above and beyond and move every 2-3 years, it’s far easier to move up and get paid more elsewhere.
