Based on NASA’s X-24A lifting-body aircraft from the 1960s and 1970s, the X-38 generated lift from its fuselage shape, ensuring high stability and control during atmospheric reentry. This pilotless vehicle was intended to carry up to seven astronauts autonomously. Prototypes underwent successful test flights in the late 1990s, where a B-52 aircraft released the X-38 at high altitude, allowing it to glide to a landing using its guidance systems and a large steerable parafoil for precise touchdown. Despite promising results, the program was canceled in 2002 due to NASA's budget constraints and shifting priorities toward completing the ISS. NASA then relied on Russian Soyuz spacecraft for emergency crew return.
