One contributing factor to this is likely that few geologists actually want to go into industry as their first choice. People studying geology typically do it for scientific advancement or the environment, so they'll want to stay in academia or work on conservation

My uncle is a geologist and tried to retire years ago but the state keeps calling to come back on a contract. He’s worked for at least 3 extra years against his will. 😂

Yep! So many people questioned my major in the early 2000s. Getting the first job was hard but after that I have always found work. 20 years as a geologist now, working fully remote, and making great money. Most importantly, I still love it!

as an engineer that took a couple of “dirt classes” it wasn’t my forte. soil is so complex and we will always need geologists!

One of my kids does sea floor mapping to keep shipping channels, military channels etc open- also exploration. She’s a geologist.
