Every summer, thousands of horses thunder across the grasslands of Xinjiang in one of China’s most spectacular annual events: the Xinjiang Heavenly Horse Festival🐎🌿 Held in Zhaosu County, the festival celebrates the region’s centuries-old horse culture and its famous Ili horses. The name “Tianma” (Heavenly Horse) dates back more than 2,000 years, when Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty praised the exceptional horses of the region as “Heavenly Horses.” Today, Zhaosu is still known as China’s Home of the Heavenly Horse. The festival features horse racing, equestrian performances, cultural shows, traditional music and dance, horse industry exhibitions, camping and local food. But its biggest highlight is the breathtaking “10,000 Horses Galloping” spectacle. Despite the name, the exact number varies each year. Local herders release and guide massive herds of horses across the grasslands, often through shallow rivers, creating the dramatic scenes that regularly go viral online.
