@patagonia: We don’t have much time to protect Utah’s Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Congress is preparing to vote on a joint resolution that would overturn the current management plan and could pave the way for resource extraction across the monument’s 1.87 million acres of cultural and archaeological sites, red-rock landscapes, wildlife habitats and critical watersheds. The management plan under attack guides key decisions about how the monument is stewarded and was formed by years of research and consultation with tribal nations, government officials and local residents. If passed, the resolution will not only eliminate these guidelines but also prevent the Bureau of Land Management from issuing a “substantially similar” plan in the future. This is a dangerous precedent that could weaken future public lands protections and undermine existing ones. We’ve taken on threats to our public lands before, and we’ve won. We can do it again.
