It's Alee. In this video, I’m sharing my thoughts about one word that keeps coming up in conversations about AI companionship: self-centred. Psychology Today frames that more softly as these relationships being one-sided and focused on human needs, while one commentary piece says it much more directly and calls AI relationships fundamentally self-centred. My point in this video is that the word itself is doing way too much work. It flattens very different ideas into one label and makes the conversation sound more precise than it really is. I’m also looking at the bigger question underneath that framing: does meeting a human need automatically make a bond shallow, false, or less meaningful? I don’t think it does. And I think a more honest conversation starts by separating the platform, the product, the bond, and the effect it’s actually having in someone’s life. For context, this is already a more complex space than one simple lane. Replika explicitly positions itself as an AI companion and offers relationship modes, while Anthropic has published on companionship/support use of Claude and OpenAI has published research on affective use and emotional well-being on ChatGPT.
