Down Memory Lane 🔵❤️ A letter from Najjera ✍🏾 Monday, 1st June, 2026 “Orubengo” – the Grinding Stone In my home district of Ibanda, Western Uganda, Karo—our beloved millet bread—has always been the heart of our meals. It is food for every hour, every season. We would take millet porridge at dawn, share Karo at midday, and once again gather around it for supper, year after year, as if time itself revolved around its presence. Long before the milling machines came into fashion, it was our grandmothers, mothers, and sisters who faithfully prepared Karo flour upon the old grinding stone, known to us as Orubengo (singular) and Emengo (plural). With the smaller hand-held stone, Enseiso, they patiently worked the grains into fine flour. One glimpse of that grinding stone even today awakens a flood of tender memories—of my dear Mukaka, my maternal grandmother, of my late beloved mother, and of my sisters, their rhythmic motions producing the flour that sustained our bodies and bound our generations together. What may surprise many is that we never stored flour in bulk as is common today. No, we cherished only the freshly ground flour from that sacred stone. The taste was unmatched—richer, fuller—carrying with it a raw, fragrant aroma we call Omushongi, something no modern mill can ever reproduce. Our ancestors were wise beyond measure. They perfected the delicate balance of millet with pounded, dried cassava to form the starchy wonder we knew simply as Karo. Truly, it was food crafted not just for the stomach but for the soul. Yet, as I often lament, this tradition is fading. The younger generations, especially the millennials, may never fully grasp the intimacy of those practices—how we prepared, preserved, and served meals with care and reverence. Now, supermarkets line their shelves with processed, packaged Karo and even Obushera, our porridge, laden with additives and preservatives to prolong its life but robbing it of its soul. Still, I hold on to the past with gratitude. And here, in this modern age, I find myself treating Facebook as our new kind of fireplace—where we gather once more, to share stories, to keep alive the warmth of olden days, and to remind ourselves of the beauty of simplicity. #jaqs_chronicles 🔵❤️ #fblifestyle #goodmorning #photo #photooftheday #picoftheday #life #cute #Love #fypシ゚ #fypシ゚viralシ #instagood #insta #instadaily #instamood #life #oldisgold #memories #ibandadistrict

#Deutschland #Krisenvorsorge #Zivilschutz #Geopolitik #Sicherheitspolitik
