@oscar.foraday: Puglia, Italy - small fish/prawns, big world. This isn’t a criticism of Italy, by God. How I wish I could be an Italian!! Not the sort invented from unresolved fantasies spurned by the Godfather, White Lotus, or even the last Winter Olympics. But the kind of Italian who seems to have inherited, by birthright, a working knowledge of how to stand in a square, how to eat late without apology, and how to argue with affection. My grandmother died when I was a kid, and those of you who know me know it is no secret that I have spent most of my life poised on the lookout for another one. There is no better place to find one than here. Italy is practically a country built on the emotional authority of grandmothers. So, maybe that is the real seduction of the place. Not the postcard version or even my Vespa fantasy. It is the feeling that somewhere, behind a half-open shutter, there is still an older world operating on older terms, where food is not content, time is not productivity, and sitting together is still treated as a perfectly legitimate human activity. Still, the place gets you. It gets you in the church bells arriving late, as if even God himself has accepted that punctuality is not the highest virtue. It gets you in the towns between the views, where beauty and abandonment sit close enough together that you start to feel faintly ashamed of having come looking only for the first one. And that is the uncomfortable bargain of travelling somewhere beautiful. You arrive wanting to be changed by a place, then spend half the time trying to make sure nothing inconveniences you too much. Maybe the best you can do is notice the difference. Between visiting and consuming. And maybe, if you are lucky, you stop looking for the Italian holiday you were sold and start paying attention to the one in front of you. #italy #storytelling #travel #homecooking #reflection
