to be so fair, they’re also adaptations of two different characters, DCAU hawkgirl is Shayera Hol (the thanagarian one), while the Superman movie uses Kendra Saunders

That’s not the same Hawkgirl from the cartoon. The one from the cartoon is from an alien from Thanagar the one in Superman is a human who bonded with Nth Metal

Only in the animated series. There's a couple different versions of Hawkgirl in the comics, either aliens or reincarnations of a god or half reincarnations, and all of them have removable technology-based wings.

Shiera was in the show, Kendra was in the movie. (The Hawks have a notoriously convoluted history of retcons, so basically, every adaptation is going to be an amalgam of ideas.)

So the movie version seems to be able to shrink them back into her or take em out when needed, the continuities have changed a lot so its confusing but at first they were costumed wings but the cartoon version was changed into an alien instead. Also cartoon version is Shayera Hol while movie version is the Kendra Saunders version. Also there is a Hawkgirl and Hawkwoman too so it gets a little mixed up there

So, my recommendation when it comes to the hawks in DC is to not think too hard about it. They've been ret-conned so often and so frequently that it's hard to keep track. Sometimes they're humans. Sometimes, they're aliens. Sometimes they're aliens that were worshipped as Egyptian Gods that then died and were reincarnated as humans. Sometimes, one of them is an alien and the other is a reincarnated Egyptian. Sometimes it is a combination of these things. Best bet is to just start with a blank slate every time you meet a new hawk.

Shayera Hol is an alien from the planet Thanagar, her wings are fully connected and part of her body with far greater strength than humans but weaker than WW and Superman Kendra Saunders is a human with technology and super sonic scream I believe
