What I’ve gathered over the years from both him and Whoopi explaining their collective thought process is that he came to the conclusion that doing “performance theatre” in blackface while having an open affair with a woman of color would essentially be the personification of “but I have a black friend” and that would be the ultimate joke to encapsulate the other jokes he would tell while in character. I do wonder how she came to the same conclusion that it would be funny, but that’s their prerogative and a choice was made. Was it the wrong choice? Clearly. But the fact that both of them still choose to speak about such a regrettable situation so many years later instead of being dismissive about it after the first few explanations is commendable in the sense that accountability is importantly to them, but it doesn’t go as far as making the incident go away.
