The restrictions on the professors seems substantial. I think they would almost always have a better answer to any given question given time and resources.

(1) Teaching is not the main task of a law professor (research and publishing is) and (2) Using AI in legal practice is a good way to lose your license because AI hallucinates case citations

"Better" in this case seems to imply approximation to a right or consensus answer, but the diversity of opinion and disagreement among the professors may mean that legal opinion is more dynamic than reflected in the LLM.

As an attorney, I think the public is generally misguided in their understanding of the PRACTICE of law rather than the law itself. If you ask an LLM what a black letter law states and how it relates to a relatively simple set of facts you will be properly serviced majority of the time. But the PRACTICE of the law is to expand or contract existing legal statues and case law to fit the large set of facts related to a clients case. I may have a case where my sole purpose is to strategize and argue that the word “material” in a given statue does or does not encompass the facts of my clients specific situation, in addition to conducting research specific to the court system and judge involved to properly negotiate settlements or predict ruling outcomes. I may even argue that while a statute on paper seems to prohibit a certain action by my client, the reasoning for the actual statues existence itself says otherwise. Not to mention taking into account jury emotions or my clients physical appearance. It’s a joke among lawyers that all you learn in law school is how to say “I don’t know” because the law from afar seems insanely rigid but up close you can manhandle it to your hearts desire.

As a former law student, I think it is worth noting that the point of office hours is not to learn the law but to learn how to do well on that professors exam. This reflects the legal profession where you need to be correct but also to satisfy your client or a judge. Therefore I think these findings should be limited to a conclusion that ai is generally better at explaining black letter law than expert humans solely upon recall. I don’t find it very informative on the future of legal education

I can see an LLM being able to answer black letter, law school 101 questions better than a professor given 3 minutes. But for complicated issues vs a lawyer who can research, it's not there. As a test, I asked for citations for an issue I'm working on. 4 of 8 citations were total hallucinations and the other 4 were tangentially relevant, but still wrong.
