Johnson as a pioneering LGBTQ+ activist and one of the most recognisable figures of New York City’s queer liberation movement. But beyond the protests and iconic photographs was a person who built community, supported those around her and brought joy wherever she went. Born in 1945, Marsha became a beloved figure in Greenwich Village and later co-founded STAR alongside Sylvia Rivera, helping provide support for homeless queer and trans youth.
