In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites while gradually adding half of the sugar until stiff peaks form. In another bowl, beat the egg yolks with the remaining sugar until pale and fluffy. Mix in the milk, oil, and vanilla. Fold in the dry ingredients, then gently fold in the whipped egg whites until fully combined. Pour the batter into a greased 8-inch pan and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let the cake cool completely, then poke holes all over the surface.
