@abbie.cheeseman: Beverly Hills Unified School District spent $16 million in lawsuits trying to stop a subway tunnel from going under their high school. But they lost and the first part of the D Line Extension has officially opened on May 8th!! Congrats to @LA Metro 🥳😁 #losangeles #lametro #dline #purpleline #transit
I'd compain about a school district wasting $16 million, but it was Beverly Hills 90210 so...

There needs to be some law or something to stop public transport projects getting constantly bogged down by stupid lawsuits like this. Data centers can break ground in months meanwhile California’s HSR still isn’t ready

Now we need metro to start connecting those lines beyond DTLA.

I am sure they can afford 16 million. They cannot gate Beverly Hills.

A similar thing happened with Arlington, Massachusetts with the MBTA's Red Line decades ago. The difference is that the town just banned construction of tunnels near the high school (simplified explanation). They only recently decided to repeal the law, but it's a little too late.

This may be the only time I have heard of a school having to much money on its hands… surely there were some other LA schools that could have used the money wasted on the lawsuits

I’m so tired of special interest groups being able to unilaterally stop projects that benefit the many. Be it transit, increased housing density, etc.

You forgot the funniest part, because of all their lawsuits it was determined that in fact the route that went under Beverly Hills Hills high school was by far the safest, and in fact the only Safeway to get through that area. Literally every single alternative that was found went through way more dangerous fault, lines, methane, gas pockets, so one and so forth. $16 million proving that the route Metro originally chose was the best choice.

& that’s not the full story because the only real story here is that for decades rich people have been lobbying against building public transportation and lobbying for more roads and cars. Because public transport won’t allow corporations to rob us blind
